Rappaport Prize
The Anthropology and Environment Section announces the Annual Rappaport Student Panel. The panel will be held annually at the AAA meeting and reviewed by the A&E Section. Five graduate students will be invited to present on the panel and one of these selected papers will be awarded the Annual Rappaport Student Prize. Each panelist will be awarded $100 to defray travel expenses and the Prize winner will receive an additional $250. All of the selected panelists will be encouraged and guided by the A&E Board to pursue publication in relevant journals. Interested graduate students should submit a 1000 word abstract to the Rappaport Prize Committee. The committee will then select five students to be invited to present a paper as part of the Rappaport Student Panel. (Note: students who are not selected for the Rappaport Panel will be considered for other A&E reviewed panels and placed if appropriate). Those students selected to participate on the panel will have a specific deadline to write their papers. The papers should be written with the expectation that at some point they will be submitted for publication.
The Rappaport Student Panel will be held at the AAA meetings each year. Papers will be given by each of the students and a senior A&E member will serve as the discussant. The Rappaport Prize winner – selected from among these panelists – will be announced at the A&E Business Meeting.
The panel is part of an effort to improve the mentoring process for graduate students as they pursue A&E related careers. Participating in the panel provides students an opportunity to present their work to the broader anthropology community. It is also an opportunity for students to receive constructive feedback on their work by junior and senior scholars in the A&E community.
Additional information will be posted to the EANTH list-serv and printed in the A&E column of Anthropology News in the coming months.
