Section Spotlight: Association for Feminist Anthropology

Since its establishment in 1988, the Association for Feminist Anthropology (AFA) has focused on the important intersection of gender and culture.  The organization has been a leader in promoting feminist scholarship and policy work in all four fields of anthropology.  The foremost goals of the AFA include outreach and mentoring of students, ongoing development of feminist pedagogy and raising the visibility of feminist anthropology within the discipline and across disciplinary boundaries.

The AFA is notable not only for its exceptional panels at AAA annual meetings, but for its dedication to organizing and supporting numerous efforts within the AAA to encourage justice, inclusiveness and human rights. In past years, the section worked to establish child care at AAA annual meetings and has advocated for the association to consider laws regarding women's reproductive rights when selecting locations for annual meetings.

Efforts of the AFA to encourage member networking and advance professional development include the creation of a mentoring program, prizes and travel grants for AFA members, the publication of several edited collections honoring the work of feminist anthropologists and the publication of a section journal, Voices.

The AFA sponsors several award opportunities including:

  • Sylvia Forman Prize- named for one of the founders of AFA; recognizes an outstanding undergradute and graduate student essay on a topic in feminist anthropology.
  • Zora Neale Hurston Travel Award- given to two students to defray costs of traveling to the AAA annual meeting
