American Anthropologist

American Anthropologist is the flagship journal of the American Anthropological Association and is published on a quarterly basis. American Anthropologist follows the mission statement and goals of the American Anthropological Association by advancing anthropology as a discipline that studies humankind in all its aspects, involving archaeological, biological, ethnological, and linguistic research. It also attempts to further the professional interests of anthropologists by disseminating anthropological knowledge and illuminating its relevance to human problems.

From the Editor-in-Chief, Tom Boellstorff

I am honored to have been selected by the Executive Board of the American Anthropological Association as Editor-in-Chief for the next term of American Anthropologist (September 2008 to September 2012). Since I have served as Editor-in-Chief in an interim capacity since June 2007, this means that barring some unforeseen circumstance, I will serve for a little over five years as Editor-in-Chief. I take this charge seriously and hope to continue in the footsteps of my predecessors by working to continually transform American Anthropologist so that it represents the American Anthropological Association—and the discipline of anthropology more generally—as effectively and broadly as possible. You can see my website to learn more about me.

Submissions to American Anthropologist

The editor of the journal seeks to enhance the association's mission by publishing articles that add to, integrate, synthesize, and interpret anthropological knowledge; essays on issues of importance to the discipline; research reports; obituaries; and reviews of books, films, and exhibits.

American Anthropologist welcomes manuscripts that speak across subdisciplines but also welcomes those that originate within a single subdiscipline. In the latter case, we work through the editorial process to unpack subdiscipline-specific terminology and provide contextual information that will make manuscripts maximally intelligible to all readers, without requiring that authors alter their research questions, analytical style, or writing voice.

Contributions from all subdisciplines in both their basic and applied dimensions are welcomed, as are those focusing on broad, cross-cutting problems, themes, and theories. Manuscripts written for the profession at large that develop general implications from exacting substantive research will be of particular interest. Collaborative work, particularly among colleagues in different subdisciplines, is encouraged, and contributions from international colleagues are desired.

American Anthropologist Launches "Public Anthropology Reviews" - Request for Submission of Review Materials

AAA is pleased to announce the launch of "Public Anthropology Reviews," a new review section in American Anthropologist, that debuted in March 2010. Please read the inaugural essay.

Public Anthropology Reviews will highlight anthropological work principally aimed at non-academic audiences, including websites, blogs, white papers, journalistic articles, briefing reports, online videos, and multimedia presentations. The editors will also consider other traditional and innovative mechanisms for communicating anthropological research and concepts outside of academic realms and welcome suggestions. Please note that this review section will complement existing review sections and will therefore not review books, films or museum exhibits.

We are now accepting submissions. Please send materials for review, ideas for review essays, and inquiries to the review editors at the email and mailing addresses listed below. Please do not send books, which should instead go to AAA Book Review Editor Rosemary Joyce.

Editors: Melissa Checker (CUNY Queens C), Alaka Wali (Field Museum) and David Vine (American U)
