Budget Travel to Philly

Philly's SEPTA system trainOne reason why the Executive Board chose Philadelphia for the 2009 AAA Annual Meeting is because it is easily accessible for many members. For many in the northeastern US, travel to the "city of brotherly love" can be done for less than $25. Here's the skinny for those with skinny wallets!

"CHINATOWN BUSES": No-frills transport from Boston, New York and Washington DC’s Chinatowns to Philly's Center City.

  • New Century Travel bus service runs from Brooklyn or Manhattan to Philadelphia for $12 each way or $20 round trip.
  • Apex buses  run from State College, PA to Philly ($30) and from DC to Philly ($28).
  • GoToBus is a double-decker option, with buses from DC to Philly ($28) and from NYC to Philadelphia ($20).

TRADITIONAL BUS LINES: Now with lower fares and free WiFi.

  • BoltBus offers some fares as low as $1! It runs from Boston and New York City to Philadelphia.
  • Greyhound and Peter Pan reward early bookings. Sample fares include a 7-day advance roundtrip ticket between New Haven, CT and Philadelphia for $85.50 and a roundtrip between Amherst, MA and Philadelphia for $57.

TRAINS:  Amtrak has service into 30th Street Station, and so do less expensive regional lines.

  • SEPTA offers regional train service as far south as Wilmington, DE and as far north as Trenton, NJ.
  • SEPTA connects in Trenton, NJ to the Northeast Corridor line on NJ Transit which runs through Princeton, Rutgers, Newark Liberty Airport, and Pennsylvania.
